What’s the difference between a skin resurfacer and a chemical peel?

The difference between peels and resurfacers is in the strength and penetration of the active ingredients.

Skin resurfacers are superficial exfoliating treatments and work only on the top layer of the skin, clinically referred to as the stratum corneum. Conversely, chemical peels are more intrusive as they penetrate the mid to lower layers of the skin.

Although both treatments are effective, it is important to note that chemical peels require a longer downtime and therefore patience and a commitment to taking meticulous care of your skin pre and post treatment.

How will these exfoliating treatments improve my skin?

DermaQuest chemical peels and resurfacers offer a specific and slightly different range of benefits which will be discussed at the pre-treatment consultation.

With both treatment types, you will notice a positive difference in overall skin tone and complexion. The results are likely to continue to improve over multiple treatments.

During a thorough initial skin assessment and consultation, I will advise you on which skin resurfacer or peel best suits your skin type and which is more likely to achieve the desired results. For best results I will always recommend having a course of skin resurfacers before building up to stronger chemical peels.
Prior to any skin resurfacer/peel treatment, it’s important to balance your skin over a few weeks using a DermaQuest Essential Starter skin kit. This will give you optimal results and ensure that your skin is healthy and stable when you have the treatment. Balancing the skin consists of gentle cleansing, improving skin hydration and protecting the skin from UV rays.

The first stage of the resurfacer treatment is to cleanse your skin in order to help the active ingredients fully penetrate. If you are having a skin resurfacer, this will then be applied and left for up to 10 minutes, depending on your skin’s sensitivity. The resurfacer will then be removed and neutralised using a specific chemical that de-activates the active ingredients

A chemical peel is a stronger treatment than a resurfacer and is applied and left on the skin for longer. It is self-neutralising which means the active ingredients deactivate automatically after 24 hours. There is a progressive sensation of heat that will plateau after 5 minutes. Post treatment will involve the application of aftercare products to promote healing.

The level of sensation you experience will depend on your skin tolerance, skin condition, severity of any skin complaint and the strength of the peel.

Immediately after both chemical peel or resurfacer treatments your skin may feel warm, red and tight. If you have had a resurfacer, these side effects usually subside within 24-48 hours and may include temporary flaking of the skin.

For chemical peels you can expect up to 10 days of downtime with significant peeling of the skin from day 2 to day 7. This usually resolves itself by days 8 to 10.

A course of 3-4 chemical peel treatments applied once every 4 weeks, or a series of 6 resurfacer treatments every 2 weeks will usually give optimal results.

Provided you maintain your skin with quality skin care products as recommended at our initial consultation, the improvement you see following your treatments will be long lasting.
