What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a skin rejuvenation treatment that triggers the body’s healing response, helping to reduce the signs of ageing and improve acne scars.

The SkinPen microneedling device is used to cause controlled micro-injuries. The 14 micro needles pierce the skin 100+ times/second, potentially creating 1,600+ microscopic wounds/second as the pen moves across the skin. These cause the body to release cytokines and growth factors which stimulate the skin to produce more elastin and collagen.

How will microneedling improve my skin?

Studies have shown microneedling to boost collagen production by up to 400% over a course of 3-6 treatments.

Piercing the skin triggers your immune system. Your body reacts by removing debris from the wounded area, increasing blood flow and creating new tissue to repair the damage. The new collagen that is produced contracts, tightening the skin, while the elastin improves the skin’s elasticity. This leaves your skin feeling and looking younger, while diminishing the appearance of scars.

Dermal rolling is another form of collagen induction therapy and works on the same principles as the SkinPen. However, the SkinPen is more precise and less painful because the needles all go into the skin at a 90-degree angle. It is also far more controlled and therefore safer and less painful.

Microneedling is not suitable for all skin types. This will be determined during the skin consultation.

A topical anaesthetic cream is applied for 30 minutes prior to the treatment in order to make it a more comfortable experience. The SkinPen device will pass over the target areas and then a post treatment cream will be applied to help repair your skin.

Downtime will vary depending on the person, however it is common to experience discomfort, redness, swelling, flaking of skin and some tightness for up to 48 hours. Some clients have described the sensation as similar to having sunburnt skin.

A course of microneedling can be performed once every 4-6 weeks.

The SkinPen is an established and fully tested device that provides effective results. It is a wireless device which means as a practitioner, I have full control over its manoeuvrability across the face and body.

There are many other microneedling devices on the market however I choose to use SkinPen because it is the only device approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
